Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Important to Health
For quite some time, people have been told to limit the amount of fats in their diet, but not all fats are bad – some fats are very good. The good fats include Omega-3 fatty acids. There are 3 kinds of these fatty acids, two of which are found in fish, and 1 which is found in seeds and nuts. Omega-3 fatty acids provide numerous health benefits, including those concerning the heart. These fatty acids may also have some value in keeping the digestive system functioning normally, and they also support healthier skin. there is also a possibility that Omega-3 fatty acids might be able to reduce inflammation.
Flax Seed Oil Omega-3 Fatty Acid
The Omega-3 fatty acid found in flax seeds is called alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. This is somewhat different from the Omega-3 found in fish oil (DHA and EPA fatty acids), and ALA must be converted into DHA and EPA before the body can utilize it efficiently. Fortunately, only a tablespoon or two of flax seed oil will provide the same benefits as the oil from fish. In order to preserve as much nutritional value as possible when extracting the oil from flax seeds, its best to use the cold-pressing process. Because high temperatures are not used to make extraction easier, the flax seed oil retains more of its nutritive value, including its content of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Heart Health
About a third of Americans have high levels of triglycerides in their blood. Triglycerides are a type of cholesterol and may be responsible for cardiovascular problems. Triglycerides usually are a signal that levels of bad cholesterol, the kind that sticks to the walls of veins and arteries, is present. Omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce the level of triglycerides in the blood and help to avoid some of the health conditions associated with high levels.
Keeping the Skin Younger-Looking Longer
As people age, some of the most noticeable changes occur to the skin. Aging causes the body to make less collagen and elastin, which may cause the skin to wrinkle, sage, and become thin and dry. Collagen is the protein support that helps keep skin firm and taut, but the body makes less and less as the years pass. Omega-3 fatty acids help support both elastin and collagen and this may help the skin remain smoother and less likely to wrinkle.
